North Korean Food Experience with North Korean Defectors
The PUAC Taebaek City Chapter (Head Kwon Jung-ki) held the "North Korean Food Experience with North Korean Defectors" event on May 2, 2024 at the Joint Workshop Site (Happiness Sharing Center). The PUAC members enjoyed North Korean food using mountain greens from Taebaek.
In his opening remarks, Chapter Head Kwon Jung-ki said, "We hope that experiencing the North Korean food using Taebaek’s wild vegetables will increase understanding of the food cultures of the two Koreas, and will serve as an opportunity to advance the peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula."
In her congratulatory remarks, Taebaek Vice Mayor Shin Ok-hwa said, "Reunification is a long-standing desire of our people that must be realized. I hope this event will raise awareness of peaceful reunification and spread consensus in the local community."
The event began with a lecture by Heo Jin, a North Korean defector, and the participants made North Korean dishes such as one which uses osurinamul and Pyongyang dumplings, which were made into lunch boxes. They were delivered to the local underprivileged, Korean War veterans, and the elderly enrolled in the Taebaek City Adult Literacy Class through the Taebaek City Social Welfare Association.
The PUAC members of the Taebaek City Chapter will use these and other events to continue their efforts to increase local residents' understanding of North Korean food culture and awareness of peaceful reunification.
